Pyramid Lake Loop

This is the chill, scenic loop everyone hopes to find five minutes from town. The Pyramid Lake Loop serves up constant water-and-peak scenery with Pyramid Mountain looming above and calm stretches along the lakeshore. It’s a well-signed, family-friendly circuit of about 5.6 km (total), with roughly 200 m of gain focused around the overlook section—enough to get your heart rate up, not enough to scare anyone off.

Highlights

• Pyramid Island is the star: a short offshoot over a wooden footbridge lands you on a tiny island with big panoramas—an easy photography win and a great rest stop.
• The Pyramid Overlook dishes out sweeping views over Pyramid and Patricia Lakes and even back toward Jasper townsite.
• Expect a pleasant mix of Douglas fir forest, lakeside walking, and the soundscape of loons and other water birds. Deer are commonly spotted in the quieter stretches.

What to expect

• Route-wise, most hikers start at the P7 lot near the south end of the lake and hike clockwise on signed bench trails (including 2B for the overlook) before descending to the lakeshore and returning on Trail 2. The surface is natural dirt with some roots and minor gravel—nothing technical.
• Trade-offs: a few short sections run beside or cross Pyramid Lake Road, and near the stables you may encounter horse traffic. It’s popular—especially around Pyramid Island—so go early or later in the day for quieter paths and softer light.

Best time to hike

• Late spring through fall is prime. Summer brings easy footing and paddling options; fall turns the bench into a color show. In winter the area is still accessible for walking or snowshoeing, but expect icy sections.

Tips

• Start at P7 to be lakeside immediately and snag Pyramid Island during a lull; start in town if you want a bit more mileage and a short climb to views.
• Consider adding nearby Patricia Lake if you want a slightly longer, equally mellow outing.
• Fishing requires a Parks Canada permit; general park entry passes apply here too. Check Parks Canada’s trail conditions and “share the trail” etiquette, especially around horse-use areas.

Worth it?

Absolutely. It’s convenient, photogenic, and low-commitment. If you’re after remote solitude, look elsewhere, but for classic Jasper vibes with minimal effort, this is an easy yes.
