Black Rock Canyon Trail

Black Rock Canyon Trail is an about 3.5-mile out-and-back from the Backcountry trailhead to the first signed junction for the Panorama Loop and Warren Peak routes, then back the same way. It follows a sandy desert wash that gradually narrows into the canyon. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours. This is the compact canyon outing; the Panorama loop and Warren Peak summit are longer hikes that branch beyond the turnaround.

The approach begins across open, low desert ground, then enters the wash as the canyon walls draw closer. Loose sand slows the gradual climb. The canyon feels more enclosed around 1.3 miles in. Black Rock Spring is described near 1.5 miles; its flow can be slow, so bring the water you need rather than planning on the spring. At about 1.7 miles, signs point toward Panorama Loop and Warren Peak. Turn around at this junction for the shorter route in this guide.

Use the Black Rock Backcountry Trailhead or the Nature Center parking near the campground; the National Park Service says parking in the Black Rock area is limited and also names the horse parking area. The Nature Center is the practical stop for a flush toilet and water before setting out; there is no food on the trail, and Yucca Valley is the nearby place to shop. Black Rock is separated from the park’s main road network, so plan the drive through Yucca Valley. Pets are not permitted on Black Rock area trails. Desert heat and dehydration are the main risks: carry your water and avoid setting out in hot weather.
