Parking

The southwest Bigfoot access is near the Eureka Peak area, but no Bigfoot-specific parking lot was confirmed. The northeastern end is in the Quail Wash backcountry, not a verified vehicle access point. Park information names Boy Scout, Covington Flats, and Juniper Flats as nearby backcountry trailheads without tying them to this exact route. Confirm both ends and arrange transport before hiking.

Safety

Remote backcountry route with open, sun-exposed sections and no on-route water or facilities documented. Carry all water and avoid hot conditions. Wayfinding may take time; sparse markers have been reported once. Pets are prohibited on trails and in the backcountry. Nearby Quail Mountain and Mount Minerva Hoyt have no maintained summit trails.

Hiking Bigfoot Trail

The routeBigfoot Trail is a 7.

Bigfoot Trail is a 7.9-mile point-to-point hike across the western Quail Wash backcountry, from the southwest side near Eureka Peak to the northeastern end of its mapped path. Allow about six hours on foot, then add time for the access plan: this is one way, not a loop. Other outings combine the trail with a loop or turn-around walk; this entry follows only the named Bigfoot traverse.

The route drops from about 5,300 feet to 3,400 feet, with roughly 460 feet of climbing and 2,340 feet of descent. The overall day trends downhill, but expect short rises and uneven footing. The mapped tread runs through open high-desert valleys and rocky canyons, with sandy sections between boulder slopes and low desert shrubs.

The southwest access is near Eureka Peak; the route finishes in the Quail Wash backcountry, not at a confirmed parking lot. Park information lists Boy Scout, Covington Flats, and Juniper Flats as nearby backcountry trailheads, but does not give parking or shuttle details for these exact endpoints. Confirm road access and your exit plan before you start. A one-way traverse only works when both ends are sorted.

Navigation and desert rulesThis is a remote route where wayfinding can take longer than the mileage suggests.

This is a remote route where wayfinding can take longer than the mileage suggests. One visitor reported sparse markers, so leave extra time for navigation. No on-route water or facilities were found in the sources checked; carry what you need. Heat and direct sun make the open sections a poor choice in hot conditions. Joshua Tree National Park prohibits pets on hiking trails and in the backcountry. Quail Mountain and Mount Minerva Hoyt are nearby, but there are no maintained trails to their summits; treat them as separate off-trail destinations, not extensions of Bigfoot Trail.
