Blencathra: Choosing Your Ridge

Overview

About Blencathra via Hall's Fell Ridge

Why go

  • Direct ridge ascent with a genuine scrambling feel
  • Big summit views for a compact mountain circuit

Heads up

  • Exposed rock and steep grass demand confidence
  • Small starting car parks fill quickly at busy times
Hall's Fell gives the route its character: a sustained, rocky Grade 1 scramble with bypasses around some of the harder steps. The upper ridge is narrow and exposed above steep slopes, while the return over Blease Fell is much more open and grassy. Expect about 750 m of ascent. The reward is a changing view over Threlkeld, the surrounding valleys, and the central Lake District as the route gains height.

Before you go

Parking

Start at the small upper car park on the road toward the Blencathra Centre, above Threlkeld. The village car park near the main road, with toilets, is a longer alternative. Park considerately and keep farm access clear.

Best time to go

Allow around four hours for a typical outing, with extra time for pauses and careful movement on the ridge. Dry, calm visibility is the most forgiving combination. Wet rock becomes slick, and winter snow, ice, or strong wind can turn the upper ridge into a mountaineering route. Early or late light works well for the ridge and summit views, while cloud can arrive quickly on the fell.

Safety

Hall's Fell Ridge is a sustained Grade 1 scramble with exposed rock, steep grass, loose ground, and potentially fatal drops. Wet, icy, snowy, or windy conditions make it substantially more dangerous. Bypass paths can also be loose, so turn back if the ridge is beyond your confidence or equipment.

Hiking Blencathra via Hall's Fell Ridge

The routeThis is an 8.6 km (5.3 mile) loop from the Threlkeld side of Blencathra.

This is an 8.6 km (5.3 mile) loop from the Threlkeld side of Blencathra. The path crosses Kilnhow Beck, passes Gate Ghyll, and climbs directly up Hall's Fell Ridge to Hallsfell Top, the mountain's 868 m summit. From there, follow the broad crest west over the summit tops and descend Blease Fell before returning through the fields and back to the village. The stored distance is the full loop, including the village approach.

Difficulty and footingThis is a hard mountain day rather than a casual summit walk.

This is a hard mountain day rather than a casual summit walk. The ridge involves hands-on movement, loose slatey rock, steep grass, and careful route choice. Bypass lines are available, but loose ground can make them a poor substitute for the crest. If you want Blencathra without the ridge scrambling, the Blease Fell ascent is gentler; Sharp Edge is a more technical alternative.

Access and dogsThe paths are public and no special hiking permit is normally needed.

The paths are public and no special hiking permit is normally needed. Dogs are legally allowed, but the exposed rocky ridge, stiles, and steep scrambling make this a poor choice for an inexperienced dog. Keep any dog close around livestock and gates, and be prepared to turn around before the ridge. The route starts near Threlkeld's village parking and toilets; the small upper parking area on the road toward the Blencathra Centre is closer to the path. Carry a map, food, water, and weatherproof layers because there are no facilities on the fell.
