Parking

Use the small informal gravel parking spots by the telephone box and at Church Bridge in Loweswater. Do not use Kirkstile Inn parking unless you are visiting the inn. Maggie's Bridge car park is a larger fallback but adds about 2 km to the walk.

Safety

The Mosedale Beck ford is the key safety decision: it can rise quickly after rain, and its stepping stones are slippery with cascades below. Do not cross in spate. Expect boggy ground, wet feet, stiles and an indistinct path on the south side of Hen Comb.

Hiking Hen Comb from Loweswater

The short versionHen Comb from Loweswater is a circular fell walk of 9.7 km (6.

Hen Comb from Loweswater is a circular fell walk of 9.7 km (6.0 miles) with around 427 m of ascent, and most people take about 3.5 hours. Call it a 6 out of 10: nothing technical, but the upper slope is steep and peaty, the Mosedale return is wet underfoot, and the path fades in places.

  • Loweswater village and St Bartholomew church, then over Church Bridge
  • Past Kirkgate Farm and out toward the open fell

  • Down the boggy south flank to a footbridge
  • Firmer Mosedale bridleway under Mellbreak, back to Loweswater
The ford decisionThis is the one thing to get right.

This is the one thing to get right. Mosedale Beck can rise quickly after rain, the stepping stones are slippery, and there are cascades just downstream, so a slip here is not a trivial one. If the water is pushing over the stones or the beck looks lively, turn around and save the fell for a drier day rather than committing to a crossing you may not be able to reverse. Check it before you climb, not after.

The ridge itself is a pleasure, grassy and mossy, with wide views to Buttermere, Fleetwith Pike, the Vale of Lorton, Mellbreak and the western fells. Below that, expect real bog on the southern descent and a path that comes and goes. Boots with ankle support, gaiters if you own them, and the confidence to hold a line on a compass bearing in mist.

ParkingThere is small informal gravel parking near the telephone box and Church Bridge in Loweswater.

There is small informal gravel parking near the telephone box and Church Bridge in Loweswater. Do not use the Kirkstile Inn car park unless you are actually visiting the pub. Maggie's Bridge is a bigger fallback but adds roughly 2 km to the day, so arrive early if you want the short version.

Dogs and expectationsDogs are welcome under close control, with stiles and plenty of mud to negotiate along the way.

Dogs are welcome under close control, with stiles and plenty of mud to negotiate along the way. This is a genuine Wainwright summit walk rather than a smooth or accessible path. The payoff is quiet: compared with the honeypot summits, you may have the top to yourself. If you want a similar mood with a rockier feel, Mellbreak across the valley makes a good companion outing.
