Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, SC
A long climb to rocky views over Loch Lomond.
Overview
Gouk Hill is a 10.3-mile out-and-back from the John Muir Way's western end beside Helensburgh Pier to the 277 m summit and back. Most of the walk climbs through town and forest; the final summit spur is a short, rough scramble. Allow about five hours. Go for the rocky top and the wide view over Loch Lomond; skip it if you want a quick hill stop.

Trail guide
Start at the low stone marker on the waterfront. Walk uphill through Helensburgh and past Hill House, then use the cycle path beside the A818 to reach forestry tracks. Those tracks climb steadily with occasional glimpses of the loch. Just after a small pond, leave the main track to the left and follow the unmarked path to the summit. The ground can be uneven, boggy or muddy. Turn around at the rocky top and retrace the same way to town.
Gouk Hill sits on the Highland Boundary Fault. Plantation forest covers most of its sides, while the top is open and rocky, with conglomerate outcrops. Look across Loch Lomond toward Ben Lomond, then turn for Balloch Country Park and the Campsie Fells. For a photo, include a little summit rock below the loch to show the hilltop setting. Parking is available by the Pier; Hill House café is an optional stop along the approach. Dogs can use the route under Scotland's access rules when kept under proper control.
