Rainbow Lake Trail

Rainbow Lake Trail is an 11.5-mile, one-way traverse from the Rainbow Lake junction at South Fork Camp to the Rainbow Creek Trail junction. It climbs Bowan Pass, drops by deep-blue Rainbow Lake, and continues through open meadows. From the north end it gains about 3,100 feet and drops 2,600. This is a strenuous backpacking leg, not an 11.5-mile out-and-back day hike. Allow a full day for the segment itself, plus the access walk: the north approach from Highway 20 adds about 6 miles before the trail begins, and the Stehekin-side approach adds about 5 miles. The full Rainbow–McAlester loop is 32 miles from Highway 20 or 35 miles from Stehekin, usually a four-day trip.

From South Fork Camp, the route climbs the rough, steep back side of Bowan Pass. Views open as you gain the pass, then Rainbow Lake appears below in its basin. After the lake and its camp, the trail continues through flower-filled meadows with views of jagged Rainbow Mountain before meeting Rainbow Creek Trail. Near the pass, frame the lake with part of the rocky slope in view; the foreground helps show how the trail drops into the basin.

The route crosses Bridge Creek near South Fork Camp and Rainbow Creek near Bench Creek Camp by ford. Snowmelt can make both crossings nearly impossible in spring, and the South Fork ford is swift and strong nearly year-round. Do not cross high water. Bowan Pass holds snow late; an ice axe is often needed through mid-July. Snow timing varies from year to year.

For north-end access, park at Bridge Creek Trailhead on the north side of Highway 20 at mile 159, just east of Rainy Pass. Cross the highway and follow Bridge Creek Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail about 6 miles to South Fork Camp. From Stehekin, take the bus or walk to Rainbow Loop Trailhead, then follow Rainbow Loop and Rainbow Creek trails about 5 miles to the south end. A backcountry permit is required for overnight stays and permits are limited. Hiker and stock camps are spaced along the route, though some are small; campfires are not allowed at Rainbow Lake Camp. There is no food service along the trail.
