A historic climb to the plateau, waterfall and big Dark Peak views.
Overview
Kinder Scout Mass Trespass Walk is an 8½-mile circular from Bowden Bridge, following the line of the 1932 protest onto the high moor. Allow five to six hours; this is a hard day rather than a quick viewpoint stroll. It earns its place if you want a route with a real story, a rough climb and a full sweep of Kinder's best features in one loop.

Trail guide
From the former quarry at Bowden Bridge, follow Kinder Road past Booth Bridge and the old sheep wash, then take the path by Kinder Reservoir. The climb begins at William Clough. It is steep, rough and eroded in places, with the stream crossed and recrossed before stone steps help you out onto the high ground. At Ashop Head the Pennine Way joins the route. Carry on to Sandy Heys for broad views over Yorkshire, Cheshire and, on a clear day, farther west; the heather is at its best in July and August.
The path across Kinder's edge is open, windy moorland, with rocky ground and very little shelter. The payoff is Kinder Downfall: a dramatic gritstone gorge where the water can blow back upwards in strong wind. Continue across the plateau to Kinder Low, around 633 metres, then past Edale Rocks and the old packhorse marker at Edale Cross. From there the route drops through fields and farm lanes to Hayfield.
The distance varies slightly between route maps because the headline figure is rounded; the mapped itinerary is about 8½ miles with roughly 600 metres of climbing. In wet weather the approach and descent turn muddy, while low cloud can make the plateau feel much wilder than the distance suggests.
Bowden Bridge is a small pay-and-display car park with 27 spaces, and it fills early on busy weekends and holidays. Do not rely on roadside or verge parking. There is a public toilet at the Station Road car park in Hayfield, but no dependable food or water stop on the high route. Dogs are allowed on a lead throughout. This is a route for a settled-weather forecast and a proper map: the open plateau is easy to underestimate, and phone signal can be patchy.
