Miller Creek Trail

Miller Creek Trail is a 7.8-mile out-and-back from Miller Creek Trailhead to Happy Valley Saddle Campground, at about 6,200 feet in Saguaro’s Rincon Mountains. It begins beside a seasonal creek, climbs the canyon’s north ridge, and finishes in a cooler, wooded saddle. Allow about five to six hours for the rocky climb and return. This suits hikers ready for a sustained ascent and remote access; it is not just a short stroll to the creek.

The first stretch follows Miller Creek through sycamore, walnut and oak. The stream is seasonal, and the path crosses it several times, so don’t count on dry feet or flowing water. After roughly three-quarters of a mile the route leaves the creek and climbs the north ridge. It gains more than 2,000 feet before the saddle, passing through brushy burned terrain before reaching the shaded upper draw. The park boundary is about 1.5 miles from the trailhead.

At Happy Valley Saddle, the climb eases into mixed pine, oak and juniper forest, with views toward Rincon Peak. The campground is a useful turnaround and a gateway to longer routes; stop at the saddle camp; the longer Rincon Peak route continues beyond it. Published figures range from 3.9 to 4.1 miles one way, while an older hike account estimates about five. The mapped route to camp is about 3.9 miles each way, so plan on 7.8 miles round trip.

The route is rough and can be hard to follow where creek crossings or washouts obscure the tread. Watch for cairns and carry a reliable map track. Natural water is seasonal and must be treated; bring the water you need for the whole hike. Backcountry camping requires a permit, and pets are prohibited in the wilderness. The remote approach road has multiple wash crossings and can become impassable after heavy rain.
