Turk Mountain Overlook is a roadside viewpoint at mile 93.7, 2,720 feet above sea level, looking out from Shenandoah’s Blue Ridge. The quartzite-capped peak of Turk Mountain rises straight ahead, with the Shenandoah Valley to the right and Blue Ridge ridges to the left. Stop here for a broad mountain view; the summit itself is a separate hike.
Face northwest and keep Turk Mountain in the frame with the lower valley and long ridgelines. That gives the scene depth and makes this view distinct from a close crop of the wooded slopes. The peak, valley and Blue Ridge are the landmarks to look for.
The overlook is at mile 93.7; the Turk Mountain trailhead is a separate stop at mile 94.1. The trail makes a 2.2-mile round trip to the 2,981-foot summit, so treat it as its own outing rather than a walk from the overlook.
Turk Mountain takes its name from a family who lived in this area before Shenandoah National Park was established. The park does not identify the family or give dates, but the old name is attached to the mountain that anchors the view.
