Hiking Turk Mountain Hike

What you get for the climbTurk Mountain Hike is a 2.

Turk Mountain Hike is a 2.2-mile out-and-back from Skyline Drive to a rocky summit in Shenandoah's South District. Start at mile 94.1, cross the road, follow the Appalachian Trail south to the trailpost, then turn onto the Turk Mountain Trail and return the same way. Allow two to three hours. It's a good short choice if you want a proper summit and don't mind rough footing near the top.

The climb starts after a dipThe Appalachian Trail approach drops before the Turk Mountain Trail climbs the east ridge.

The Appalachian Trail approach drops before the Turk Mountain Trail climbs the east ridge. Near the last switchback, an opening gives you an east-facing look into the mountains before the main view. The final stretch is uphill over increasingly sharp, uneven rock, ending with a short boulder scramble. The park's “easiest” label understates that rocky finish; this isn't a flat stroll.

The top is a jumble of quartzite boulders rather than a broad, level platform. From the rocks, the view opens west across Shenandoah Valley toward the Allegheny Front. On a clear day, it's the payoff for the climb. For a photo, include some of the summit boulders along the lower edge so the frame shows both the rough perch and the valley beyond.

Some of the light-colored summit rock preserves Skolithos trace fossils, marks left by ancient animals burrowing in beach sand before it hardened and changed into quartzite. They're easy to miss if you only look outward, so take a moment to inspect the rock underfoot without scrambling onto unstable blocks.

At the Turk Mountain parking area, cross Skyline Drive and take the Appalachian Trail south to the trailpost. Turn right onto the Turk Mountain Trail; another path from the lot heads away from the summit. No water source is identified on the route, so bring the drinking water you'll need. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. There's no separate activity fee or reservation, but park entry is charged, and the trail doesn't meet ADA accessibility guidelines.
