Shenandoah Valley Overlook is a roadside pullout on Skyline Drive, facing north from 1,390 feet. It is an easy stop for a broad view toward the valley’s northern end; the scenery is right there, with no hike needed.
Look to the right for Signal Knob at the northern tip of Massanutten Mountain. That ridge divides the Shenandoah Valley and splits the Shenandoah River into its forks. Front Royal lies farther right in the view. For a photo, frame the wide valley and leave Signal Knob near the right edge as a landmark.
Front Royal was incorporated in 1788. Its name is thought to come from the French le front royal, referring to the edge of British territory during colonial times. The town in the distance gives this view a link to the valley’s frontier history.
There are interpretive exhibits here, along with recycling and trash receptacles. Reach the overlook directly from Skyline Drive; use it as a short scenic pause rather than a trail destination.
