Guide
Timber Hollow Overlook is a small roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive, at 3,360 feet. It faces west from the top of Timber Hollow, where ridges on either side fall away toward the valley and Nakedtop Mountain. It makes a good short pause if you are driving this stretch and want a view that opens beyond the road. The overlook is around milepost 43; directories differ between 43.0 and 43.2, so treat that as an approximate marker.
Ida sits beyond the ridge of Nakedtop Mountain. During Shenandoah's establishment in the 1930s, it was one of the relocation settlements for families who had lived within the park boundary. Looking west here puts that history in the landscape: the town lies beyond the ridgeline as it drops toward the valley.
The open western view is the main draw. For a photo, include some of the rocks or grasses at the overlook edge in the foreground; they give the layered ridges and valley more depth. The outlook faces west, so the sunset can be part of the view when the sky cooperates.
