Timber Hollow Overlook

Overview

Timber Hollow Overlook is a high perch on Skyline Drive (3,360 feet) with big west-facing views into Timber Hollow and across the Shenandoah Valley. It’s a classic pull-in overlook that feels quieter than the park’s headliners, but the scenery holds its own.

What You’ll See

Look west to the Massanutten Range with recognizable features like New Market Gap and Strickler Knob. On clear days you can spot the ridge of Nakedtop Mountain and the small community of Ida beyond it. After fronts roll through, clouds often pool in the valleys, leaving ridge tops floating like islands.

Why It’s Interesting

The view includes Ida, one of the relocation communities where families displaced during the 1930s park creation settled. That history gives the landscape some weight beyond the postcard vista.

Hiking From the Overlook

The Appalachian Trail runs just behind the overlook, with a short connector (about 60 yards) from the parking area. It’s a handy jumping-off point for longer rambles, including routes toward Hawksbill Mountain or a Timber Hollow loop.

Wildlife

The surrounding forest and trail corridor are typical Shenandoah habitat—expect deer and a good mix of songbirds, with the occasional black bear sighting in the broader area.

This is a wide-angle landscape spot. West-facing light pops in late afternoon and at sunset; after stormy weather, watch for cloud inversions in the hollow for moody frames.

Practicalities

There are no services here—no restrooms, water, or picnic tables. Just a straightforward pullout with parking and a stellar vantage.

Best Time to Visit

• Late afternoon to sunset for warm side-light and silhouettes across Massanutten.
• Clear post-frontal mornings can deliver dramatic low clouds in the hollow.
• It’s generally less crowded than marquee overlooks, but weekends still see more turnover; arrive earlier for an easy parking spot.
