Parking

Start at Whiteoak Canyon Parking on Route 600 near Syria, Virginia. The NPS boundary-access sheet describes a privately owned lot for 25+ cars reached across 0.2 mile of private land, with no roadside parking. Use designated parking only; current fees were not verified.

Safety

This is an experienced two-day backcountry itinerary, not a day hike. Overnight camping requires a park backcountry permit. The route crosses Hughes River several times; the 2006 NPS itinerary warns that spring or heavy rain can raise crossings to knee-to-waist depth. Water levels change, so check current conditions and avoid unsafe crossings.

Hiking Whiteoak Canyon and Nicholson Hollow Loop

The routeThis is a two-day, 16.

This is a two-day, 16.1-mile backcountry loop from Whiteoak Canyon Parking, rated “Experienced” in the park itinerary. It links Whiteoak Canyon’s waterfalls with the Skyland–Big Meadows Horse Trail, Old Rag Fire Road, Corbin Mountain and Indian Run trails, then follows Nicholson Hollow and roads back to the start. Plan on about 12 hours of hiking across both days; that is an estimate, not an agency time. Campsite and exit choices change the daily mileage.

The itinerary climbs Whiteoak Canyon for 3 miles, then follows the horse trail, Old Rag Fire Road, Corbin Mountain and Indian Run into Nicholson Hollow. It places the day’s campsite in the hollow after continuing at least a short distance beyond the Indian Run junction. The overnight backcountry trip requires a park permit.

Water crossingsThe route follows Hughes River in Nicholson Hollow and crosses it several times.

The route follows Hughes River in Nicholson Hollow and crosses it several times. The park’s itinerary warns that spring flows or heavy rain can make crossings knee- to waist-deep; that document dates to 2006, and it does not describe today’s water level. Check current conditions and do not attempt a crossing that is unsafe.

The returnDay two continues down Nicholson Hollow, crosses Route 600, and returns by Weakley Hollow Fire…

Day two continues down Nicholson Hollow, crosses Route 600, and returns by Weakley Hollow Fire Road, Berry Hollow Road and a paved road to the car. The mapped route is 15.24 miles versus the itinerary’s 16.1-mile total; the old route describes variable campsites and exit points, so confirm the current map before relying on exact mileage. At the Whiteoak boundary access, use the designated lot and stay on the access path across private land; roadside parking may be towed.

The NPS access sheet describes a privately owned lot with space for 25 or more cars and no roadside parking. Current park rules require a physical leash no longer than six feet for pets on trails. This route uses Old Rag Fire Road; the separate Old Rag Ridge, Saddle and Ridge Access trails are prohibited to pets.

Shorter alternativesThe 4.

The 4.6-mile round-trip Whiteoak Canyon falls hike from Skyline Drive and the 8-mile Nicholson Hollow–Corbin Cabin hike from Old Rag parking are separate options, not shorter versions of this loop.
