Crescent Rock Overlook

Crescent Rock Overlook is a west-facing roadside stop on Skyline Drive, about mile 44, at 3,550 feet. Pull in for a broad mountain-and-valley view; the sightline from the parking area is worthwhile on its own, while a short rocky path leads to a more open outcrop. The rocks are uneven and the edge has no guardrail, so take care and skip the outcrop if exposed footing makes you uneasy.

Hawksbill Peak, Shenandoah’s highest summit at 4,050 feet, rises across the westward view. To its right, Nakedtop drops along Hershberger Ridge toward Page Valley; on a clear day the panorama reaches the Massanutten range. For a photo, include some of the foreground rocks before framing the stacked ridges beyond. Sunset light is popular and can bring more visitors, so a quieter time gives you more room at the outcrop.

Look for columnar rock on Hawksbill’s northwest face. The Catoctin greenstone began as lava about 570 million years ago, then changed under heat and pressure during Appalachian mountain building. Some of the clearest column-like joints are exposed on the Appalachian Trail a short walk north, an option if you want to stretch the roadside stop into a geology detour.

An interpretive sign here describes the creation of Shenandoah National Park and the resettlement of people who had lived on this land. It adds a human history to the view, alongside the deep time written in the rock.
