Trail guide
Cedar Run Falls is a 3.4-mile out-and-back from Hawksbill Gap Parking Area, descending Cedar Run Trail to a waterfall in a narrow rock gorge. The climb back out makes this a strenuous half-day walk rather than a roadside stop; allow about three to four hours. This entry covers the falls-only outing, not the much longer Cedar Run–Whiteoak circuit. The 3.4-mile report does not name its starting lot, so this route uses the upper Cedar Run access at Hawksbill Gap. Check the park map for that start before setting off.
The marked trail drops from Skyline Drive through a wooded slope toward the creek. The mapped corridor is about 1.6 miles each way to the tread point nearest the falls; the full round-trip figure includes retracing that descent. The footpath is steep and follows a stream valley with smaller cascades and narrow rock gorges. Expect stream crossings near the falls, then the same sustained climb on the way back.
Cedar Run's main fall is tucked between steep rock walls, with a smooth natural rock slide above the drop and a larger pool farther downstream. The final approach described for this outing crosses the stream and climbs the bank opposite the trail, so the last few yards are rougher than the mapped tread. Rocks at the water are uneven and can be slick. Where footing is solid, frame the fall between the gorge walls with some water in the foreground; do not step onto wet ledges for a photo.
Use Hawksbill Gap Parking Area on Skyline Drive at mile 45.6, the upper access for Cedar Run Trail. Shenandoah's park entrance fee applies. Dogs are allowed on the route on a leash no longer than six feet.
