Minas de San José

Minas de San José is a pair of roadside viewpoints on TF-21, set among the pale pumice workings of a former open-cast mine. If you want a striking short stop in Teide’s volcanic landscape, take time for both: the northern outlook faces Montaña Rajada, while the southern viewpoints open across lava fields, pumice valleys and the Cañadas.

The two named overlooks sit at kilometre 38.5, with parking at the viewpoint. You can look around the open, stony ground, but it is loose and uneven, with steeper slopes nearby; keep to marked paths. No nearby services are listed, so bring what you need and plan food and restroom stops elsewhere.

Pumice was extracted here in open-cast mines. The former workings left a broad, light-colored surface beside dark volcanic rock, giving the stop a stark contrast that feels almost lunar.

From the northern viewpoint, look for the varied forms in lava flows from Montaña Rajada. Their shapes reflect the slope the lava crossed and differences in its composition, so the dark ridges and folds change as you move along the overlook.

The southern outlook sits by a lava-flow front opening toward the Cañadas. From here the view stretches over lava fields and pumice valleys into the broad caldera landscape, a different scene from the closer lava forms to the north.

For a photo, use the pale pumice in the foreground against the dark lava. Try one frame toward Montaña Rajada for the flow patterns, then turn south for the wider sweep across the Cañadas.

The 6.5 km PNT 39 route links Minas de San José with Montaña Majúa near the cable-car station, crossing the base of Montaña Blanca and surrounding lava fields. It is a longer approach than the roadside stop; stay on marked paths and take care over loose ground and steep slopes.
