Pico Viejo Viewpoint is a high-altitude lookout on Teide’s upper slopes, at 3,504 m. It faces the broad crater of Pico Viejo, about 800 m across and 200 m deep, with Tenerife’s western volcanic landscape beyond. This is the marked viewpoint reached from La Rambleta, not Pico Viejo’s separate summit or crater rim.

Follow the marked PNT-12 trail for about 731 m from the upper cable-car station to the viewpoint. It crosses volcanic ground and is rated moderate. The short distance can feel harder at this elevation, so walk slowly and leave time for pauses. The route is described as maintained; stay on the marked path.

At 3,504 m, the thinner air can make a modest walk tiring. This route is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. La Rambleta can also be reached on foot from several park routes, including Montaña Blanca, Los Roques de García and Las Narices del Teide; cable-car and high-trail access can be affected by weather, so check current conditions before setting out.

Pico Viejo’s crater is not the only volcanic story in view. The 1798 Las Narices del Teide eruption broke out on the volcano’s flank and left the dark Arenas Negras lava flow below. It was the most recent eruption within the national park and the longest of Tenerife’s historic eruptions.

The view reaches the Abeque ridge and Teno massif. When visibility is clear, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro can appear on the western horizon. Clouds can hide the islands, but they also make the high ridges stand out against the lower landscape.

There is no café at the viewpoint. The upper station at La Rambleta has toilets and vending machines with drinks and packaged snacks; those facilities are back at the station, not along the trail or at the lookout.

For a photo that shows the scale of the place, keep some of the dark lava ridge in the foreground and give the crater room across the frame. On a clear day, a wider composition can include the islands beyond it.
