Trail guide
Alto de Montaña Blanca is a 6.6-mile out-and-back from Montaña Blanca Viewpoint on TF-21. Follow PNT 07 for about 2.8 miles to the junction, walk the 0.9-mile PNT 07.1 summit circuit, then return on PNT 07. Allow about four to five hours. The 820 m figure you may see is for the short branch; the full walk includes the long approach from the road.
The route starts at about 2,350 m and climbs roughly 370 m over the lower PNT 07 approach. The path crosses pale pumice country, where the giant rounded Huevos del Teide stand out against the volcanic slope. They are accretion balls: fragments of ejected magma that rolled downhill and settled at the volcano’s base.
PNT 07.1 returns to its junction after circling to the front of Montaña Blanca, topping out around 2,740 m. The payoff is a broad look across Teide National Park, the southern side of Tenerife and the wall of Las Cañadas. For a photo, keep some of the pale summit in the foreground so the caldera rim has scale.
This is a high-mountain walk on loose, uneven ground, and conditions can change quickly. Reaching PNT 07.1 from the road means walking PNT 07 to a booking checkpoint at the junction. The PNT 07 route requires an advance reservation and specific mountain equipment, while the PNT 07.1 page lists free access without a reservation. Confirm which rule applies to this itinerary before setting out. The published equipment list includes mountain footwear, long trousers, warm layers, a thermal blanket, hat and gloves, water, a charged phone and a headtorch.
