Overview

About Teide Summit and Crater

Why stop

  • A rare look into Teide's crater with an almost-360-degree summit panorama.

Heads up

  • Steep final ascent at extreme altitude, with separate authorization and equipment rules.
Teide Summit and Crater is a high, rocky rim viewpoint where PNT-10 reaches the crater at about 3,715 m. It is the park’s signature stop if you want to look into Teide’s crater and stand above the caldera, but the thin air and access rules make this a planned outing. A cable-car ticket does not authorize the summit walk. Reserve PNT-10 separately and check its current equipment requirements.

From La Rambleta, the upper cable-car station at about 3,550 m, PNT-10 climbs roughly 650 m to the summit. The route is about 0.66 km, takes around 55 minutes, gains about 183 m and reaches gradients up to 60%. That is a strenuous climb at this altitude even though it is short; take it slowly and rest when you need to. If you hike up from below, PNT-07 and PNT-09 are separate reserved routes, and PNT-10 authorization does not cover the approach to its starting point.

The rim gives an almost-360-degree panorama, with the crater below and the island’s volcanic landscape spreading out beyond it. On exceptionally clear days, all seven major Canary Islands may be visible. For a photo, keep the rocky rim in the foreground so the crater and caldera have a sense of scale; turn toward the horizon if the cloud sea opens up.

Near the crater, look for fumaroles, where vapor rises through the rock, and the rare endemic Teide edelweiss along the route. They are small details in a stark, high-altitude landscape, so slow down and scan the ground as you climb.

The Teide-Pico Viejo volcanic structure rises about 7,500 m from the seabed, making it the world’s third-tallest volcanic structure. Its landforms preserve several stages of volcanic construction and erosion. PNT-10 is named for Telesforo Bravo, the Canarian geologist who helped establish the study of the islands’ volcanology.

The lower cable-car station’s visitor centre has a café-restaurant serving Canarian food, an exhibition and a shop. Those are useful stops before the ride up; they are at the base station, not beside the crater.
