“Roques de García is coming up, with volcanic towers standing against Teide. Keep this one on your shortlist, even for a short stop: the platforms at La Ruleta give you the view without doing the full hike.”

Roques de García is a cluster of volcanic towers on the edge of Llano de Ucanca, with Teide-Pico Viejo rising beyond them. La Ruleta, the park’s most visited viewpoint, spreads the view across several platforms. I’d keep this on your shortlist for the park’s signature rock scenery, even if you only have time for the roadside stop.

Make it an early stopThe viewpoint is just off TF-21, with a parking area beside it.

The viewpoint is just off TF-21, with a parking area beside it. Visitors often report that the lot fills and they have to circle for space, especially later in the morning, so an earlier stop is the lower-stress choice. Buses serve the Parador del Teide stop nearby.

You can take in the formations from the platforms, or continue onto PNT-03, the separate loop that descends toward the plain and returns past La Catedral. Treat the circuit as a hike rather than an extension of the viewpoint stop. The first section from La Ruleta is mapped as accessible for people with reduced mobility; the rest of the loop is not, and access varies between the platforms.

Why Roque Cinchado holds its shapeThe best-known pillar, Roque Cinchado, stands about 27 metres high.

The best-known pillar, Roque Cinchado, stands about 27 metres high. Its volcaniclastic layers are capped by two harder lava intrusions that weather more slowly, leaving the familiar stacked silhouette. The rock became so recognizable that it appeared with Teide on Spanish 1,000-peseta banknotes.

Llano de Ucanca is the park’s largest cañada, a broad flat basin below Teide and the caldera wall. La Catedral rises nearly vertically about 144 metres above it; columnar cooling joints give the face the look of organ pipes. Its small internal viewpoint is reached by continuing along PNT-03 past Roque Cinchado.

Read the volcanic landscapeThe towers sit among lava flows, pumice fields and cones that shape Las Cañadas.

The towers sit among lava flows, pumice fields and cones that shape Las Cañadas. The scene often looks arid, but winter snow can change the color of the high plain and caldera rim.

For the classic composition, frame Roque Cinchado with Teide behind it; the roadside platforms also give wider views across the formations and Llano de Ucanca. The closer view of La Catedral takes a walk along the trail.
