The climb and permit

Reach the area on foot by PNT-15 (Altos de Guajara). The official route is a high-difficulty, 3.38 km climb of about 2 hours 45 minutes one way to Alto de Guajara; allow for the return as well. The site is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. Advance authorization for the bivouac is compulsory and applies to the named date and people. Carry it with identification, and check whether the booking terms require a separate permit for the stratovolcano trail.

“You're nearing Los Azulejos Viewpoint, where pale green, turquoise and tan rocks sit above Llano de Ucanca. Stop for a closer look at the colors: contact with very hot water changed the rock itself.”

Montaña Guajara Bivouac Area is a designated overnight zone on the upper slopes of Guajara, at 2,698 to 2,712 m, beside the stone remains of a historic observatory. This is an exposed night outdoors, not a campground stay: tents and similar shelters are prohibited, and capacity is 20 people. Come for the chance to watch sunset, spend a night on the high rim and see the caldera in the morning, if you’re equipped for a strenuous mountain outing.

There are no services close by, so bring all your food and water, a headlamp, warm layers and wind protection. Weather above 2,500 m changes quickly, and the day-to-night temperature swing can exceed 20°C. The permitted overnight window is from 7 p.m. or sunset until 8 a.m. or sunrise. Pack out all waste. Pets are not allowed except guide dogs; tents, drones, amplified sound, smoking and fires are prohibited, apart from a gas stove for cooking.

French astronomer Jean Mascart used the nearby shelter in 1910 while observing Halley’s Comet. The stone walls are in poor condition, so keep well clear and never use them for shelter. From safe ground, the view opens across Las Cañadas toward Teide, Pico Viejo, Montaña Blanca and their lava flows; on a clear night, Cassiopeia and Pegasus are among the constellations visible from Guajara. For a photo, frame Teide across the basin with Guajara’s rough summit rocks in the foreground.
