“Roques de García is coming up, with volcanic towers standing against Teide. Keep this one on your shortlist, even for a short stop: the platforms at La Ruleta give you the view without doing the full hike.”

PNT 03 Roques de García is a loop from Mirador de La Ruleta around the rock towers to Llano de Ucanca, then back past La Catedral. The mapped route is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) and takes about two hours. It packs Teide’s most recognizable formations and a wide volcanic plain into a short walk. I’d keep it on your list if you want to leave the viewpoint and see the rocks from several angles, but don’t expect a flat stroll.

The first stretch shares ground with the accessible walk and stays nearly level, with the formations beside you. Continue toward Llano de Ucanca, where the path begins a gentle descent and opens onto the plain. From there it skirts La Catedral and climbs back toward La Ruleta on a steep, zigzagging section. The loop gains about 660 feet (202 m) overall. Watch the signed junctions: PNT 23 and PNT 26 lead away from this short circuit.

Roque Cinchado, El Torrotito, El Burro and Roques Blancos give the route its shape; Teide dominates the skyline behind them. Roque Cinchado is the classic foreground. Include a little path or plain in the frame with Teide behind the tower, and the scale reads much better than a tight crop of the rock alone.

The open Llano de Ucanca is a broad, pale plain of sedimentary rock, edged by dark lava walls. Near La Cascada, a fluid lava flow spread into a broad tongue. Look for smoother rounded flows beside the ropey, twisted pahoehoe textures; the route passes close enough for the contrast to be clear.

La Catedral is a tall phonolite chimney, the hardened core of a volcanic conduit that erosion eventually exposed. It is a different shape from the blocky towers around Roque Cinchado, and it marks the turn toward the steep return. The route’s plant list includes broom, laburnum, summit rose, marguerite and cabezones (Cheirolophus falcisectus); no reliable flowering season is established, so treat them as details to notice rather than a reason to time the hike.

A short hike at high altitudeThe trail stays around 6,600–7,160 feet (2,020–2,184 m).

The trail stays around 6,600–7,160 feet (2,020–2,184 m). Loose stones, uneven ground and the final steep climb make it moderate despite the short mileage; the altitude can add to the effort. Much of the walk is open with little shade, so bring water and sun protection. The accessible path is only the opening section; the full PNT 03 loop is not accessible for reduced mobility.

If the full loop isn’t a fit, stay on the separate accessible route from La Ruleta toward Tagorores and return the same way. It shares the opening stretch but avoids the steep loop. The Cañada Blanca Visitor Centre across TF-21 has public toilets and exhibits about the area and Guanche culture; the Parador nearby has a restaurant. Both are separate stops, not facilities along the trail.
