“You're nearing Los Azulejos Viewpoint, where pale green, turquoise and tan rocks sit above Llano de Ucanca. Stop for a closer look at the colors: contact with very hot water changed the rock itself.”

Los Azulejos is an elevated roadside viewpoint on TF-21 above the Llano de Ucanca. Pale green, turquoise and tan outcrops sit beside the volcanic basin, making this a worthwhile short stop on a drive through Teide’s caldera. Parking is limited, so wait for a space at the viewpoint rather than stopping on the road.

The unusual colors come from rock that was subjected to strong pressure and contact with very hot water. The broken faces also show how the high-altitude climate wears the rock down: day-to-night temperature swings cause cracking, while ice crystals push into existing fractures. Look for the pale bands and sharp, angular edges.

Look out over UcancaFrom the elevated viewpoint, the Llano de Ucanca stretches out below the colored slopes.

From the elevated viewpoint, the Llano de Ucanca stretches out below the colored slopes. Information panels add context to the rocks and landscape. Take a moment to look across the plain as well as at the outcrop beside the road; the scale of the open basin is part of what makes this pullout memorable.

Use a colored rock face in the foreground with the broad plain behind it; a wider frame shows both the formations and their setting. Teide appears beyond the roadside rock wall in some views. Keep off the traffic lane while taking photos. The viewing area is beside the road, but step-free access details are unclear, so check ahead if a level route matters. No food, drinking water or restroom service was confirmed at the viewpoint; plan those elsewhere.
