Trail guide
From the Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide, this is a 6.0-mile out-and-back: follow PNT 04 to Cañada del Montón de Trigo, then take PNT 05 up to Degollada de Guajara and return the same way. Allow about four hours. The Parador approach is a long, mostly gentle traverse; the last 1.2 km is a steep climb on PNT 05. This route ends at the pass, not at Alto de Guajara.
From the Parador, follow the marked PNT 04 east toward Montón de Trigo. The historic track passes through a chain of open volcanic depressions, including Cañada del Capricho. Look for Piedras Amarillas, yellow rock formations beneath Guajara; the gravel track makes a useful foreground for the mountain. Continue to the PNT 05 junction at Montón de Trigo, which is reached on foot rather than by car.
PNT 05 climbs about 216 m in roughly 1.2 km. Its steep slopes, loose rock and uneven footing make this a high-difficulty route, even though the climb itself is short. Follow the marked trail all the way to the col between Pasajirón and Guajara. From there, broad views open across the park and south Tenerife, with the head of Barranco del Río just below. PNT 15 continues toward Alto de Guajara; that summit hike is a separate extension, not part of this route.
PNT 05 follows a section of the Camino Real de Chasna, the historic route that linked Tenerife's north and south. The pass is the only trail crossing of the caldera wall in this area. At the col, take time to look into Barranco del Río as well as back across the caldera.
PNT 05 is free and does not require a reservation. Park in designated spaces near the Parador and join PNT 04 there. The climb is above 2,180 m and reaches roughly 2,385 m; loose, uneven ground is the main footing challenge.
