Trail guide
PNT 23 is a 5.41 km (3.36 mi) one-way route from the upper PNT 03 trail at Roques de García to PNT 09 at Degollada de Pico Viejo, also called Degollada de Chahorra. It climbs from about 2,175 m to 3,046 m, gaining roughly 1,025 m (3,360 ft) and descending about 153 m (500 ft). Allow about four hours for the climb. This is a steep point-to-point route, not a loop. Its far end is a separate trail junction high on the mountain, so settle your onward route or return before setting out. Retracing PNT 23 makes the walk about 10.8 km (6.7 mi).
The high mountain vegetation thins as you climb until only very stunted Teide broom remains near the upper stretch. The route is also a chance to see different lava forms left by eruptions. Loose rock and sharp-edged lava make the footing unstable in places; sturdy mountain footwear matters here.
An advance reservation is required. The climb reaches about 3,000 m, where lower oxygen and quick temperature changes can bring on fatigue or dizziness. Required kit includes mountain footwear, long trousers, warm layers, a thermal blanket, hat and gloves, water, a charged phone and a head torch; ice or snow also requires crampons and an ice axe. The route is not suitable for visitors with heart, respiratory or mobility problems. Pets are prohibited except guide dogs, children under three are not permitted, and hikers under 16 need an adult. Check current access and weather notices before departure.
