Mala Walk

Mala Walk is a 2 km (1.24 mile) return walk from Mala carpark to Kaṉtju Gorge, then back on the same path. It follows Uluṟu’s base past caves and rock art to a narrow gorge at the foot of the rock. This is one to choose for the close-up cultural stops and the gorge, rather than for a long hike or a summit view. The park grades it as an easy Grade 2 walk and allows about an hour and a half. The mapped track is mostly dirt, with short grid-surfaced bridge sections; visitors also describe it as smooth underfoot.

Mala Walk is its own out-and-back, not a short circuit of the whole rock. Choose it when you want the caves, art and gorge without committing to the longer Uluṟu Base Walk; choose the full circuit when spending more of the day walking around Uluṟu is the point. The two routes share the same setting but have different payoffs.

The route passes caves associated with the Mala people and a kitchen cave where food was prepared, then examples of rock art before reaching the gorge. These are places to pause and look closely; the walk is much more rewarding when you don't hurry through the stops. A free ranger-guided walk follows the same route and adds interpretation about the art, traditional tools and the landscape. The ranger version is described as wheelchair accessible.

Drinking water, toilets and an emergency call device are listed at the walk. You'll need a valid national park pass to enter. Dogs aren't permitted in the park; assistance dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than 3 m. Start at Mala carpark, the access for this 2 km return route.
