Kaṉtju Gorge

Kaṉtju Gorge is a sheer-walled gorge and semi-permanent waterhole at the end of the Mala Walk on Uluṟu. The 2 km return walk from Mala carpark is Grade 2; allow about 90 minutes. Benches beside the waterhole make this a good place to slow down once you arrive.

The path passes places where Mala people camped, a kitchen cave and rock art. It brings visitors into the Mala story, one of the most important Tjukurpa stories, and its connections to ceremonies, rites of passage and Aṉangu daily life. Photography is prohibited at culturally sensitive sites, so follow the restrictions around them.

This is a semi-permanent waterhole, not a waterfall every day. Heavy rain can send water down the gorge; between rain events, the pool may look small. If the falls are your main reason to walk, know that they depend on recent rain.

Mid-morning and late afternoon can overlap with guided walks and tours. Sunset is often quieter, and the setting sun lights the gorge directly. A wide-angle view helps fit the sheer walls and sky into the frame.
