“You're approaching Mala carpark at the base of Uluṟu. For a close look without spending the whole morning walking, I'd choose the Mala Walk to Kaṉtju Gorge: two kilometres return, allowing about ninety minutes.”

Hiking North-east Face Walk

A long leg of the Base WalkNorth-east Face Walk is the 4.4 km one-way route from Kitchen Cave on Mala Walk to Kuniya Piti.

North-east Face Walk is the 4.4 km one-way route from Kitchen Cave on Mala Walk to Kuniya Piti. It is the longest open stretch of the Uluṟu Base Walk, and the track pulls away from the rock as it crosses the north-east side. It gives you a substantial section of the circuit without committing to the full 10.6 km loop, but this leg by itself does not bring you back to its start.

Parks Australia allows about 1 hour 45 minutes and grades the walk Grade 3, where some bushwalking experience is recommended. The route is point-to-point: walking back the way you came makes it about 8.8 km in total; the full Base Walk is a different 10.6 km circuit. Kitchen Cave and Kuniya Piti are the named endpoints. Kuniya Piti is not the separate Kuniya Walk or its car park, so plan whether you will continue around the Base Walk or return before you set out. The walk page lists water and an Emergency Call Device, but no toilets; it does not specify parking or return-transport arrangements for this leg.

Experience it in personThis stretch passes a culturally sensitive part of Uluṟu.

This stretch passes a culturally sensitive part of Uluṟu. Aṉangu ask visitors not to photograph or film the north-east face. Some stories connected with its sacred sites belong to senior Traditional Owners and should be learned in person; the details are not reproduced here. The walk closes for the day from 11 am when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 40°C. Ordinary dogs are not allowed in the park; guide, hearing and other assistance dogs are permitted with documentation and a leash no longer than three metres.
