Tektite Trail

Overview

Tektite is a short, moderately challenging out-and-back on St. John’s south side that packs a lot into a small footprint. It’s about 1.4 miles total (out-and-back) with a stout initial climb and big payoffs in coastal scenery and solitude. The path is unofficially maintained, so expect a more rugged, backcountry feel than the park’s marquee hikes.

Route and highlights

The trail starts on Lameshur Road, roughly 60 feet west of the top of the hill, and immediately climbs through dry scrub and cactus. From the ridge, views open to the park’s southeast coast, and on clear days you may even spot St. Croix on the horizon. A spur to Cabritte Horn Point is the star—think dramatic sea cliffs, seabirds riding the wind, and a photogenic little gorge near the tip. Keep an eye out for barrel cacti with edible fruits, wild orchids, and the occasional deer.

Geology lovers get extra candy here: the route skirts a deep gorge with sheer rock walls and passes near a small sea cave lined with quartz formations. Offshore at Beehive Cove lies the site of the 1969 Tektite Project, where aquanauts lived in an underwater habitat; its concrete moorings are still visible beneath the surface.

Add a snorkel

Bring a mask and fins if conditions allow. The Tektite snorkel area just offshore features deep water around large rock outcrops and the chance to see barracuda, tarpon, and turtles. It’s a visually striking complement to the hike when seas are calm.

What to expect

This is not a groomed path. Sections can be overgrown—sometimes chest-high grass—with narrow tread and encroaching cactus. It’s exposed and hot, with limited shade and a few rocky moves near the point. Plan on 45–75 minutes depending on heat, photos, and a visit to the spur.

Best time to hike

Start early to beat the heat and enjoy softer light on the cliffs. The trail sees relatively few hikers year-round, so it’s a good choice when the park’s classics feel busy. For a similar but clearer path and equally epic views, consider Ram Head if you want something less brushy.

Access and logistics

The trailhead is on the south side of Lameshur Road near the hilltop. The road beyond pavement can be rough; a 4x4/high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and some rental contracts restrict this road—check before you go. Parking is very limited (a tiny roadside pull-out); do not block traffic.

Tips

Wear sturdy shoes and consider light long pants for brush and cactus. Carry plenty of water and sun protection. Cell service can be spotty—tell someone your plan and download maps before you lose signal.
