Trail guide
The walk starts at the National Park Centre in Reeth and threads out of the village through a narrow ginnel, then follows a lane past the doctor's surgery. From there field paths open onto broad Swaledale views as you make your way to Healaugh. The return runs beside the River Swale and back into Reeth, so the loop ends on water rather than retracing the outward lanes.
The interest lies in contrast: two very different Dales villages at either end, enclosed fields and stone walls in between, open valley views on the higher sections, and the river alongside you for the final stretch.
Expect a mix of surfaces, including short stretches of road walking near the villages, plus gates or stiles and fields with livestock. Some ground is uneven or wet, which is the main thing that slows the walk down. This is not a remote fell day, and the terrain stays modest throughout.
The official start is the National Park Centre and visitor access point in Reeth. Parking is available around the edges of Reeth's central village green, and the National Park notes that several points use honesty boxes.
Dogs are allowed on public rights of way. Keep them on a lead around livestock, and use a short lead from March through July to protect ground-nesting birds. Keep to rights of way and leave gates as you found them.
