Hiking Connector Trail

A useful through-hike linkConnector Trail is a 5.

Connector Trail is a 5.1-mile, one-way wilderness walk between Hop Valley Trailhead and Wildcat Canyon Trailhead. It's most useful as a link across Zion's high country, not as a destination day hike. Allow about two to three hours and arrange a pickup at the far end; returning on foot doubles the distance. The named Connector reaches its Wildcat Canyon Trail junction at roughly four miles, then this full access-to-access route follows about 0.9 mile of Wildcat Canyon Trail to the trailhead.

From Hop Valley, the route crosses Kolob Terrace Road and heads through the open fields of Lee Valley. Look for Pine Valley Peak and distant West Temple. Much of the valley is a private inholding, so keep to the established trail. For a photo, let the meadow fill the foreground and keep Pine Valley Peak in the frame; it gives this broad view a clear anchor.

Slickrock and ponderosaThe path climbs over sandstone slickrock near the northeastern base of Pine Valley Peak, then…

The path climbs over sandstone slickrock near the northeastern base of Pine Valley Peak, then enters dark ponderosa forest. Views open toward upper Coal Pits before the route joins Wildcat Canyon Trail. There isn't a summit or dramatic overlook at the end; the change from open meadow to rock and pine is the payoff.

Keep an eye on the treadThis route sees little use.

This route sees little use. Some stretches are overgrown, and it can be easy to lose the tread on slickrock near Pine Valley Peak. Pause to confirm the route before crossing open stone. Snow can hide the faint sections in winter; spring through fall is easier for following the path.

Access and rulesBoth trailheads are on Kolob Terrace Road, and each has a pit toilet.

Both trailheads are on Kolob Terrace Road, and each has a pit toilet. There are no water-filling stations at either end, so bring what you need. Pets aren't allowed on these trails. Overnight trips require a wilderness permit, and camping isn't allowed along the trail or anywhere in Lee Valley.
