Hiking Grünstein Summit Trail from Hammerstiel

A short route with a serious climbGrünstein from Hammerstiel is a 5.0 km out-and-back to a small summit, via Grünsteinhütte.

Grünstein from Hammerstiel is a 5.0 km out-and-back to a small summit, via Grünsteinhütte. Allow about 2½ hours for roughly 500 m of climbing. The mileage is modest; the uphill effort is not. Pick it for a close view of the Watzmann and a broad panorama over Königssee, and skip it if you want a gentle stroll.

The climb to the hutStart at Parkplatz Hammerstiel on the broad forest road.

Start at Parkplatz Hammerstiel on the broad forest road. After about 850 m, or 15 minutes, turn left by a stream onto a narrow path. It climbs the wooded slope in tight switchbacks, then rejoins a broad track about 125 m below the hut. The route is signposted, but the steady uphill is the work. Panels every 100 m of ascent show how much you have climbed and how much remains; this is the signed Herz-Kreislauf-Testwanderung, or heart-and-circulation test hike.

Hut, then summitGrünsteinhütte sits at about 1,220 m just below the summit.

Grünsteinhütte sits at about 1,220 m just below the summit. Its terrace looks across Königssee toward Jenner and Hohes Brett, and it is a useful food stop when open. Check its operating status before relying on a meal. From the hut, follow the summit signs; the final path is stepped and rooty, crossing a shallow saddle before reaching a small top with two wayside shrines and wooden benches.

What opens up above the treesThe summit looks toward the Watzmann massif, with Königssee below and the wider Berchtesgaden…

The summit looks toward the Watzmann massif, with Königssee below and the wider Berchtesgaden Alps around it. On a clear day, the panorama also takes in Untersberg, Hoher Göll, Hochkönig and Hochkalter. The top drops steeply on several sides. For a photo, keep some of the lake or forested slope beneath the Watzmann so the frame shows how abruptly the peak rises above the valley.
