Follow the dolomite scree to a high alpine hut
Overview
The Wimbachgrieshütte hike is a 17-kilometer (10.6-mile) out-and-back from Wimbachbrücke, climbing about 699 meters (2,290 feet) through Wimbach Valley to the hut at 1,327 meters. Allow about five and a half hours for the full walk. It is a long, steady climb on gravelly paths, and the valley gradually opens into a huge pale scree basin beneath steep limestone walls. Come for a full-day mountain walk and the changing shape of the valley, not one single viewpoint. Wimbachschloss makes a natural shorter turnaround if you do not want the full climb.

Trail guide
Start at the Wimbachbrücke bus stop or parking lot and follow the paved path to Wimbachlehen; from there the route becomes gravel and is nearly level at first. At the fork after Wimbachs Wollstadl, you can pay to walk through Wimbachklamm on the outward leg. The short gorge squeezes its stream between rock walls. The alternative bypass climbs steeply above it, and both routes rejoin soon afterward. At the next fork, stay on the signed path and do not cross the bridge: the path on the far side ends there.
The climb continues mostly along the right side of the valley to Wimbachschloss, a mountain restaurant and a good place to pause before the longer upper stretch. Joseph Conrad von Schroffenberg, Berchtesgaden’s last Prince-Provost, built it in 1784. After the area came under Wittelsbach rule, it served as a hunting lodge for King Max II and Prince Regent Luitpold. From the lodge, the path crosses scree below Schlossgraben, then threads through light mountain forest.
At about 1,100 meters, the trail crosses a broad scree flow before continuing on the left side of the valley through forest and open ground. Wimbachgries is coarse debris weathered from the surrounding brittle Ramsau dolomite; the park describes the deposit as up to 300 meters deep, while the route crosses a swath up to 300 meters wide. Snowmelt and heavy rain move fragments slowly down-valley, which is why this pale gravel field keeps changing. For a photo, include the scree in the foreground and the enclosing cliffs behind it so the width of the valley reads clearly.
Wimbachgrieshütte sits at 1,327 meters and is a seasonal mountain refuge and restaurant. Visitors often single out the hut’s cake and dumplings; Wimbachschloss is another food stop on the route. Check the hut’s seasonal schedule if you are counting on a meal or an overnight stay. Return to Wimbachbrücke along the same valley corridor. Wimbachklamm is available only on the outbound walk, and dogs must stay on lead in the national park.
