Set at the end of Megalong Valley, Dunphys Campground is a simple, scenic base that feels close to the wild side of the ranges. Expect open, grassy camping with broad views toward the Wild Dog Mountains and beyond. It’s named for conservationist Myles Dunphy, and it still carries that classic bush-camp vibe—low-key, spacious, and a bit adventurous.
This is a drive-in NPWS campground with room for tents and camper setups. Facilities are basic: drop toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and gas BBQs. There’s no potable water—sometimes an untreated tank is available, but it’s unreliable—so plan to bring all drinking water. Fires are allowed when conditions and park rules permit; check current alerts before you go.
Kangaroos are the regulars here, often grazing at dawn and dusk. You might also spot goannas and plenty of birdlife overhead. On quieter days it feels wonderfully peaceful; on peak weekends it can draw a crowd of campers and day walkers, so the vibe depends on when you turn up.
Dunphys doubles as a springboard into the park’s wilder corners. Track and firetrail access heads toward Medlow Gap and the Wild Dog country, with options that connect to big-name multi-day routes. Even if you’re just sampling, there are rewarding out-and-back rambles with big-sky views.
Come self-sufficient: drinking water, food, and any firewood you intend to use (when fires are permitted). There are no shops, fuel, or Wi‑Fi on site, and phone reception is patchy to non-existent. Warm layers are smart year-round—nights can be cold.
Access is via gravel roads through the valley. It’s generally doable in 2WD when dry, but expect potholes and go slowly; after rain it can be rough. You’ll pass through private-property gates on the way—close them behind you.
Midweek or outside school holidays for the quietest experience. Arrive early on weekends if you want a spot close to your car or a prime patch of flat ground. For photography, late afternoon light paints the ridges; nights are great for stargazing when skies are clear.
