Parking

Start at Dunphys Campground, reached from Blackheath via Megalong Valley Road. The final 5 km is unsealed and can be narrow, steep and boggy after rain; 2WD access is listed. The campground has a car park, but its capacity is not stated.

Safety

Remote terrain, about 1,300 m of climbing, and some very poorly visible track sections make navigation a serious part of this walk. Carry an offline map, enough food and water for the day, and allow a daylight margin. No potable water or food stop was confirmed at camp or on the route.

“You're nearing Dunphys campground, a grassy clearing with views toward Mount Cloudmaker and the Wild Dog Mountains. I'd choose it for a remote camping base, with a chance of kangaroos or wombats visiting the grass.”

Hiking Blue Dog Ridge Loop

A full-day backcountry loopBlue Dog Ridge Loop is a 17.9 km circuit from Dunphys Campground through the Wild Dog Mountains.

Blue Dog Ridge Loop is a 17.9 km circuit from Dunphys Campground through the Wild Dog Mountains. It is a long, hard walk for people comfortable with remote routes, not a quick lookout stroll: the mapped circuit gains about 1,300 m. Allow around 8 hours, plus longer stops. A shorter, similarly named line is also listed in some maps; this distance follows the full loop from Dunphys.

The circuit links Blue Dog and Black Horse ridge country with the Breakfast Creek–Coxs River junction, then climbs back toward the ridges before closing near camp. The sampled profile falls from about 600 m at Dunphys to roughly 220 m by the river, then climbs to around 790 m. That big drop and return climb explain the effort. Some mapped sections have very poor track visibility, so save the route offline and pay attention at junctions; parts are unpaved bushwalking tread rather than a built path.

A separate 750 m return sidetrack reaches a small mesa projecting north from Blue Dog Ridge; it is extra to the 17.9 km loop. From there, the views run over Breakfast Creek valley to the north and Coxs River valley to the west. The lookout is named for Wilf Knight of the Sydney Bush Walkers. It is the best place on this walk for a wide valley view, with rock and scrub in the foreground and forested ridges beyond.
