“You're nearing Dunphys campground, a grassy clearing with views toward Mount Cloudmaker and the Wild Dog Mountains. I'd choose it for a remote camping base, with a chance of kangaroos or wombats visiting the grass.”

Galong Cabins are two self-catering cabins near the end of Megalong Valley Road in the southern Blue Mountains. They suit an overnight escape and a quiet base for the valley, rather than a quick park stop. Each has two bedrooms and sleeps four, with views over Megalong Valley.

A little historyThe cabins were used by horse pack saddlers in the 1970s.

The cabins were used by horse pack saddlers in the 1970s. NPWS refurbished them and opened them as bookable accommodation in 2026. Kangaroos and red-necked wallabies are resident around the property.

Plan the drive inAllow about 50 minutes from Blackheath.

Allow about 50 minutes from Blackheath. The final 5 km is narrow, unsealed and steep in places, and can bog after rain; NPWS lists the route for 2WD vehicles. You’ll pass three gates, including a locked park gate whose code is sent after booking; the final 2.5 km crosses private property, so leave gates as you find them. Mobile reception is limited, so save your access details before leaving coverage. There are steps up to the veranda and no wheelchair access.
