Swamp Canyon: Why the Name Fits“Swamp Canyon's overlook is coming up, with Mud and Noon Canyon Buttes beyond the rim. Two tiny creeks and a spring keep the canyon below unusually wet for Bryce, supporting grasses and willows.”

Trail guide
Sheep Creek Trail is a 5.8-mile out-and-back from the small Sheep Creek / Swamp Canyon parking area to the Sheep Creek backcountry campsite, about 2.9 miles each way. Allow around four hours. You drop roughly 830 feet from the plateau, then climb it back on the return. I’d pick this for a half-day below the rim if you’re happy retracing your steps; the walk out takes more work than the downhill start suggests.
From the shared trailhead, follow Sheep Creek Connector. The first mile crosses open uplands on the Paunsaugunt Plateau above the rim. Then the path follows the Sheep Creek draw south and descends below pink limestone cliffs into the canyon bottom. At the fork, the Swamp Canyon branch makes a different loop; stay on the Sheep Creek route for the campsite.
The plateau is open and meadow-like, with late-spring wildflowers along the upland stretch. Near the descent, the trees break enough to frame Bryce’s pink and orange hoodoos; the view gets more screened as the canyon grows wooded. If you stop for a photo, include some of the pines in the foreground so the cliffs don’t look like a flat wall.
The campsite is the clear day-hike turnaround, 2.9 miles from the lot. Ponderosa pines, juniper and Gambel oak shade the site, the pink cliff tops show above the trees, and Sheep Creek can be heard nearby. The campsite is closed to overnight camping. Farther extensions are described as 3–5 miles one way, but their endpoint is unclear; check with a ranger before continuing beyond the campsite.
Loose gravel is the main footing hazard on the descent. The same route back is uphill, and the park’s backcountry water sources are unreliable and need treatment, so carry your drinking water. Pets aren’t allowed on this unpaved trail.
