Overview
If you like your history with a side of quad burn, this is your trail. Keane Wonder Mine climbs sharply from the old mill site into the Funeral Mountains, shadowing the historic aerial tramway and rusted water pipe. It’s short but stout—about 2 miles round trip—with roughly 1,500 feet of gain packed into about a mile up. Expect a demanding grade, zero shade, and big-time views across Death Valley.
What You’ll See
From the mill ruins, the route follows an old mine road and the line of the tram towers toward the upper mine. Along the way you’ll pass preserved mining infrastructure—tramway towers, ore buckets and cables, water tanks, settling basins, and other remnants that make this feel like a walk-through museum without the velvet ropes. Near the top, you’ll encounter grated mine openings and machinery remains. Scan sunny rocks for chuckwallas basking in the heat.
Trail Conditions & Navigation
The surface is rocky and loose (think gravel and scree) with sustained steep pitches and very few breathers. Signage is limited and there are no mileage markers. The path is generally intuitive as it follows the tram line, but it can get faint or confusing above the towers—stay alert for the main tread and avoid side paths.
Best Time to Hike
Target late fall through early spring for manageable temperatures. This hike is fully exposed with no reliable water, so avoid summer and hot days. For photos, the light is friendliest early and late when the landscape glows and contrast is softer.
Tips & Notes
Bring real desert kit: 2–3 liters of water per person, sun hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Trekking poles help on the loose, steep descent. Do not climb on structures or enter mines—openings are fenced for a reason, and tailings can contain hazardous materials. Stay on the trail to avoid unstable debris.
