Trail guide
From the car park in Ganllwyd you cross the A470, which is a busy main road, so take your time and keep children and dogs close. Then it is pavement to the left as far as Dolmelynllyn Farm, up the estate driveway toward the hall, along the lower track toward the cottages, and through a gate signed to the lake. Circle the water, use the viewing platforms, and retrace the same access back to the car.
The walking is on level ground with hard surfaces, described as suitable for wheelchair users, though the approach does include pavement, a road crossing and an estate driveway rather than being fully off road. Sensible to check the day's weather and your own kit, since surfaces and gates always feel different in the wet.
The lake was made by damming a stream and has been cleared of silt and overgrowth, so you get open water, a small wooded island and a shoreline of mature trees. It is a genuinely good spot for quiet wildlife watching from the platforms, with salmon, sea trout and dragonflies all associated with the water. No guarantees on any given visit, so bring patience and binoculars if you have them.
Dogs are welcome on leads. Given the road crossing and the working farm and estate buildings on the way in, keep them short and close for the whole approach.
The estate also has a longer four mile walk and a separate walk up to the Rhaeadr Ddu falls, both a big step up in effort and terrain from this one, so treat the lake circuit as the easy option rather than a warm up loop of the same path.
