Lake Bellfield: A Walk on the Dam Wall

Overview

About Lake Bellfield

Why stop

  • The dam wall gives open water-and-mountain views

Heads up

  • Cold water gets deep quickly, and the wall can be windy
Lake Bellfield is a broad reservoir below the central Grampians, with the ranges rising directly beyond the water. It works as an easy change of pace from Halls Gap's lookouts and harder walks: you can get to the shore, take in the mountain reflections, and walk the dam wall without committing to a long hike.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

For swimming, choose a warm day and expect the water to feel cold and become deep quickly. Early morning is the quietest bet for a calm picnic and softer reflections. Late afternoon can put warmer light on the ridges and water, while cloudier weather brings more even colour across the reservoir. Weekends and holiday periods are more likely to feel busy, so arrive early if you want the easiest choice of picnic space.

“Lake Bellfield is coming up, and it's a good place to trade a mountain climb for an easy walk beside the water. My suggestion is to start at the viewing point and follow the gravel path along the top of the dam wall.”

More about Lake Bellfield

What to doWalk across the dam wall and continue toward the viewing area and spillway for a closer look at…

Walk across the dam wall and continue toward the viewing area and spillway for a closer look at the engineering and the surrounding ridges. The surface is open and can feel exposed in wind, but the walk is straightforward. A boat ramp supports small paddle craft, and swimming and fishing are permitted. Internal-combustion motorboats are not permitted.

The wooded edges and open ground around the lake can be good for wildlife watching. Kangaroos are a realistic possibility, and emus may appear around the broader lake and road edges. Give animals space and slow down on the approach from Halls Gap.

Practical notesThe main visitor area has parking, picnic tables, toilets, and a viewing point.

The main visitor area has parking, picnic tables, toilets, and a viewing point. Bring water, sun protection, and a wind layer, especially if you plan to cross the wall or stay near the shore. Fires are restricted to properly constructed fireplaces in the picnic area, and dogs are not permitted. Treat the lake as open water: use the designated swimming area, supervise children closely, and stay off the spillway and dam infrastructure.

Why stopThe lake-level visit is different from Lakeview Lookout, which is a separate elevated viewpoint.

The lake-level visit is different from Lakeview Lookout, which is a separate elevated viewpoint. Here, the water, embankment, and spillway are part of the experience. It is a worthwhile stop for a swim, picnic, paddle, or a short walk when you want scenery without another summit.
