Best time to go
The summit and upper ridge look inward across the rugged heart of Gariwerd, with long views toward Mount William and the surrounding escarpments. In the forest, listen for native birds; kangaroos, wallabies and emus are part of the park's wildlife and may appear, especially away from the busiest central stops. They are a bonus, not a reason to leave the trail or approach animals.
Start early on a clear day for cooler temperatures, plenty of daylight and cleaner distant views. Spring and autumn are comfortable seasons for the climb, while summer makes the exposed rock and water requirement more demanding. Morning or late-afternoon side light brings out the layers in the sandstone, but keep enough time in reserve for a careful descent. Bring at least two litres of water, sturdy shoes with grip, sun protection, a warm layer and an offline map. The carpark is a basic trail start, not a serviced visitor hub, so carry everything you need.
