Before you go

Best time to go

Allow roughly 4 km return and 1 to 1.5 hours from Sundial Carpark. Most of the route is a manageable, gradual walk, but the final few hundred metres are steeper and rockier, with stone steps and uneven footing. The last section to the high point can feel like a short rock scramble, so sturdy shoes are worth bringing.

Spring is the standout season for wildflowers. For cooler walking and softer light on the ranges, start early or go later in the day, allowing enough time to finish the rocky return before dark. The shared Pinnacle trailhead is more likely to feel busy on weekends and holidays than on a weekday morning.

Safety and park rules

This is a national park walk with no dogs, bicycles, fires or vehicles on the track. Watch for unstable cliff edges and slippery rocks, stay on the formed route, and do not climb beyond the marked lookout areas.

Sundial Peak is a short, purposeful walk to a genuine summit on the southern slopes of the Wonderland Range. The reward is a broad, open view over Lake Bellfield, Mount Rosea, Mount William and the surrounding ranges. It feels more like a proper mountain outing than a roadside lookout, but it is far less of a commitment than the longer Mount Rosea circuit.

The track moves through heathy forest before becoming rockier near the top. There is a separate lookout close to the summit, with a rail and a particularly clear angle across Lake Bellfield and Halls Gap. This is the Sundial Peak walk, not the longer Pinnacle route that also leaves from Sundial Carpark.

Practical detailsDrive to Sundial Carpark on Sundial Road, then follow the signed walking track.

Drive to Sundial Carpark on Sundial Road, then follow the signed walking track. The carpark has parking and non-flushing toilets. Carry your own drinking water: a tank is reported at the carpark, but its treatment and potability are not reliable enough to use as your only supply.

The summit is exposed to wind, sun and slippery rock. Bring water, sun protection and a warm layer even when Halls Gap feels mild. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, wallabies and the occasional echidna in the surrounding bush, and give wildlife plenty of space.
