  • Close encounters with deer, wallabies, and unusual exotic animals

Heads up

  • A paid side trip outside the national park's main scenic circuit
Halls Gap Zoo is a dedicated wildlife stop between Halls Gap and Pomonal, about 7 kilometres from the township. Set across 52 acres beneath the Grampians, it holds more than 120 species and 500 animals in landscaped enclosures. The collection mixes Australian wildlife with exotic animals, so you can see kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, giraffe, cheetahs, rhinos, primates, reptiles, and birds in one compact visit.

Best time to visit

A cool morning is the safest bet for comfortable walking and active animals. Weekdays are generally calmer; weekends and school holidays suit families but can make the popular encounters busier. Pre-book any encounter you care about, and allow extra time for feeding stops and keeper talks.

More about Halls Gap Zoo

Time and experiencePlan on roughly two hours for a relaxed circuit, or longer if you add an encounter.

Plan on roughly two hours for a relaxed circuit, or longer if you add an encounter. It is a manageable family stop rather than a huge city zoo, with enough variety to keep children interested without committing an entire day. That compact scale is also the tradeoff: if your goal is wild Grampians scenery, this is a paid side trip outside the park's main lookout-and-waterfall circuit, and the animals are in managed enclosures rather than the open bush.

The zoo began as Wallaroo Wildlife Park in 1982 and later became Halls Gap Zoo. It now participates in regional breeding programs for cheetahs, rhinos, and spot-tailed quolls. That conservation work, along with the informative keeper talks, gives the visit more substance than a simple animal-feeding stop.

The tracks are firm gravel and wheelchair friendly, with accessible parking beside the entrance, wheelchair hire, accessible seating, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. Encounter access can differ, so check the individual booking details if someone in your group needs a step-free experience. Keep children close around free-roaming animals and follow keeper instructions when feeding.

There are shaded picnic areas with seating and gas barbecues, plus a souvenir shop and an on-site café. The café follows a weekend, public-holiday, and Victorian-school-holiday pattern, while drinks and snacks are available at the entry kiosk. Bring a picnic if you are visiting outside those periods, and buy the approved animal feed at the zoo rather than bringing food from elsewhere.

Why goThe close-range interaction is the reason to choose it over another scenic stop.

The close-range interaction is the reason to choose it over another scenic stop. Feed the free-roaming deer and wallabies, watch the keepers' talks, and look for animals such as the golden lion tamarin, peacocks, wombats, and Australian birds. Booked encounters can add more personal time with animals such as giraffe, cheetahs, rhinos, or dingoes, but the regular walk-through is enough for a satisfying visit.
