Overview

About Borough Huts Campground

Why stop

  • Peaceful woodland camping beside Fyans Creek

Heads up

  • No supplied drinking water and limited phone reception
Borough Huts is a useful overnight base rather than a viewpoint you rush out to see. It sits in a quiet, forested clearing beside Fyans Creek, about 10 kilometres south of Halls Gap on Grampians Road. The central ranges, the Wonderland Range, Lake Bellfield and the Mount Rosea walking area are all within easy reach by road or track.

Before you go

Best time to visit

For the calmest stay, choose a weekday or a shoulder-season night. Summer gives you the best chance of enjoying Lake Bellfield, while cooler months make the fire-pit-and-walks rhythm appealing. Morning or late-afternoon light works best for photos in the clearing, when the low sun catches the eucalypt trunks and tent sites. Pack layers, a reliable torch and enough water for the walks you plan to start from camp.

“You're coming up on Borough Huts Campground, a forest clearing beside Fyans Creek. This spot once housed workers building Lake Bellfield, so the quiet camping ground has a connection to the reservoir down the valley.”

There are 30 tent sites with adjacent vehicle parking and five drive-in sites for camper trailers, caravans and campervans. Sites are unpowered and each one accommodates up to six people. Expect open grass clearings, eucalypts, picnic tables and a relaxed bush-camp atmosphere. The woodland edges are worth a look at dawn and dusk for kangaroos and birdlife.

Plan for basic campingThe toilets are non-flush pit toilets, not running-water facilities.

The toilets are non-flush pit toilets, not running-water facilities. The campground is an easy drive on sealed Grampians Road, but the setting is deliberately low-service: phone and internet reception can be limited or absent.

  • Book and pay ahead: Advance booking is required year-round, and sites are allocated rather than chosen on arrival.
  • Bring drinking water: There is no supplied potable water. Seasonal tank or creek-fed water may be available, but it is untreated and not for drinking.
  • Use the designated fireplaces: Shared fire pits are provided. Bring your own firewood and follow current fire restrictions.
  • Pack out rubbish: There is no rubbish collection at the campground.

In warmer weather, Lake Bellfield is the nearby change of scene for swimming, canoeing and kayaking. The campground area also has a human story: it was once a small township for workers building Lake Bellfield.
