Nigel Pass Trail

Nigel Pass is that rare sweet-spot hike: big-mountain payoff for moderate effort. It runs 14.4 km/8.9 miles total as an out-and-back with about 361 m/1,185 ft of gain, usually taking around 5 hours. The route starts along the historic Wonder Road—the original Icefields Parkway alignment used until the 1960s—then leaves the trees for broad, subalpine meadows and a final, steeper push to the pass at the Banff–Jasper boundary. Expect fewer crowds than the Parkway headliners and views that punch above the workload.

What you’ll see: early on you’ll pass the Camp Parker area and an old warden’s cabin site before the trail opens into meadows. You’ll cross Nigel Creek and glacial Hilda Creek on sturdy bridges—note the color contrast: Nigel runs clear while Hilda is cloudy with glacial silt. As you climb, look up to Parker Ridge, Mount Saskatchewan, Nigel Peak, and the cliffs of Peak 9,819. In summer, the meadows can be lit with wildflowers. The last kilometer is the steepest and a bit eroded; crest the pass for a sweeping look into Jasper’s Brazeau River valley. The Brazeau itself is often an easy rock-hop here. Beyond this point, any continuation toward Cataract Pass or the Brazeau Loop becomes an unmaintained backcountry route.

Best time to hike: mid-July through September, after snowmelt calms water levels and opens the meadows. Early season can mean lingering snow and higher, trickier creek crossings. Weather turns quickly at altitude—bring layers.

Know before you go: this area is known grizzly habitat—travel in a group, make noise, and carry bear spray. The path is generally obvious but can braid in places from historic horse use; follow cairns and the main tread. Waterproof footwear helps with wet sections. You’ll hear some highway noise at the start, but it fades once you’re in the valley. Dogs are allowed on leash. No day-use permit is required for the trail itself, but you’ll need a valid Parks Canada pass; overnight/backcountry trips require additional permits and reservations.
