Overview

About Bowscale Fell Loop

Why go

  • Quiet ridge walking with wide northern-fells views
  • A satisfying summit and clear sense of progression

Heads up

  • Boggy ground and a less distinct descent path
  • Limited parking in the small starting village
The high ground gives open views across the northern fells, including Blencathra and Skiddaw, with Bowscale Tarn visible from the surrounding slopes. The route feels pleasantly quiet compared with the headline Lakeland ridges, and the summit shelter makes a good pause on a windy day.

Parking

Use the small parking area by the telephone box in Mungrisdale or the spaces alongside the village hall and Recreation Rooms. A few verges are also used, but parking is limited, so leave the narrow village roads and entrances clear. Some spaces operate with an honesty box.

Safety

The opening climb is steep, and the open fell has little shade or reliable water. Boggy ground can be tiring, while mist makes the false summits and the narrow descent path harder to follow. Expect sheep and keep dogs on a short lead under close control.

Hiking Bowscale Fell Loop

The shapeThis 5.

This 5.2-mile circular walk starts in Mungrisdale and climbs steeply through gorse onto Raven Crags. The stored distance is the complete loop, not an out-and-back total. Once on the ridge, the gradient eases across two false tops before the path reaches Bowscale Fell's summit shelter.

From the summit, the route drops for roughly 300 metres to a narrower sheep trod, then joins a wider path near a small standing stone. It descends toward the River Glenderamackin, crosses by footbridge, and returns through the valley on a flagstone path and gravel track.

Expect grass paths, rough fell ground, and boggy patches rather than a consistently engineered trail. The first climb is the main physical effort. The descent from the summit uses a less distinct path, and the false tops can be confusing in mist, so this is a route for people comfortable following a map in open fell terrain. There is little shade and no dependable drinking water on the route.

Planning itAllow about 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the loop, including stops.

Allow about 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the loop, including stops. A clear day gives the best views, while the open ridge is more exposed to wind and poor visibility than the valley. Keep dogs under close control and on a short lead where livestock is present. If you want a shorter outing focused on the lake rather than a summit, Bowscale Tarn is the simpler nearby alternative; adding Bannerdale Crags creates a longer, harder fell day.
