Kwisitis Visitor Centre

Kwisitis is a two-floor interpretive centre at the south end of Wickaninnish Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. It pairs indoor exhibits about the coast and its people with an outdoor deck over the beach and Pacific. If you want a stop that adds context as well as a view, this one is easy to fit in.

Displays and interactive exhibits cover the marine coast, rainforest and Nuu-chah-nulth culture, in English, French and Nuu-chah-nulth. Look for marine-mammal and rainforest murals, the whale-tail feature, a replica longhouse and whale hunt, animal tracks, and the connection between salmon and the forest. A First Nations Gift Shop is also listed at the centre; check its current operation if shopping is part of your plan.

Step onto the outside deck for Wickaninnish Beach and open Pacific surf. Keep an eye on the water for whales and the breakers for surfers; the west-coast weather can make the same outlook feel very different from one visit to the next. Use the whale-tail feature for a quick keepsake, then step outside for Wickaninnish Beach and the surf.

Kwisitis, also written Kʷisitis, means “the other end of the beach” in Nuu-chah-nulth. The name points to the centre's position at the southern end of Wickaninnish Beach.

The distinctive building was completed as a hotel in 1965. Architect Bruno Freschi led its extensive renovation from 1978 to 1982, turning it into the interpretive centre. The landmark building itself has stood above the beach since the 1960s.

South Beach Trail starts behind the centre and runs 800 m each way. The moderate route mixes asphalt, gravel, boardwalk and stairs; budget 1.6 km round trip if you want to reach the shore and return. Access down to the beach can be steep and eroded. South Beach is a pebble shore with large waves and strong currents, so check conditions before descending.

The centre lot is very small, and RVs and buses are not permitted. Washrooms are available only while the centre is open. It operates year-round with reduced winter hours, and the posted schedule can change, so check before setting out. A valid park entry pass must be displayed in your vehicle while stopped in the Long Beach Unit.
