Bald Hill Lookout

Bald Hill Lookout is a roadside viewpoint on a reserve at the southern gateway to Royal National Park. It sits high above Stanwell Park and is known for its coastal panorama and hang gliders launching from the hill. You can take in the main view beside the car park, so it’s a strong stop on the coast drive without a hike.

Look south for Stanwell Park Beach, the wooded Illawarra escarpment and Sea Cliff Bridge tracing the shore. Keep the bridge in a photo with the headlands behind it; that shows how the coast curves away. Gliders are a bonus, not a guarantee. They launch when wind and conditions suit.

There’s car and coach parking, a public restroom and Flying High Café in the car park, with takeaway options. Spaces can be hard to find on busy weekends, so arrive earlier if parking matters. Access information doesn’t detail route surfaces, gradients or accessible toilet facilities, so check before relying on step-free access.

The memorial at the top marks Lawrence Hargrave’s experiments on the beach below. On 12 November 1894, four box kites of his design lifted him about 16 feet (4.9 metres) above Stanwell Park Beach. The sandstone cairn was erected in 1940, with a bronze relief of Hargrave holding a kite.

A one-kilometre Great Southern Walk section links Bald Hill with Stanwell Park Beach by more than 400 sandstone steps. It turns a quick viewpoint stop into a longer outing; check current track access before setting off.
