Otford Lookout

Overview

Perched above the village of Otford, this cliff-edge lookout is the southern gateway to the Coast Track. Come for the sweeping Tasman Sea panorama; stay to sample the first coastal heath and eucalypt sections of one of NSW’s classic walks.

Getting There

• By train: Ride the South Coast Line to Otford Station. From the southern end of the platform, take the stairs and follow the short dirt road to the lookout.
• By car: Parking is available at Otford Station and at Otford Lookout.

What You’ll See

Expect big blue horizons, rugged sandstone headlands, and coastal heath. In winter (June–August), keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales offshore. On clear days you may also spot hang gliders soaring from nearby Bald Hill.

Onward Walks

• Coast Track (Otford to Bundeena): 26–27 km total, typically done in one big day or split over two with a booked night at North Era Campground.
• Shorter sampler: Head north toward Bulgo Hill for a few hours of clifftop views before turning back.

Facilities & Practicalities

There are no toilets at the lookout. Along the Coast Track, toilets are available at Wattamolla, Garie, and Bundeena. Drinking water isn’t available on the track—come self‑sufficient. Park gates generally open 7:00am–8:30pm, and a day‑use vehicle fee applies; pay at stations or via Park’nPay. Mobile coverage is patchy; download maps and the Emergency Plus app before you go.

Safety Notes

Coastal cliffs are unfenced in places—keep well back from edges. If you’re aiming for Figure Eight Pools later on the route, go only at low tide and low swell. Check park alerts for track conditions and any closures.

Best Time to Visit

Winter and the shoulder seasons bring cooler walking temps and prime whale watching. Summer can be hot and busier—start early. Weekends see more visitors; mornings offer softer light and quieter paths.
